Install a Ceiling of Tongue and Groove Type

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Installation of a ceiling of tongue and groove type is easy if we stick to the method properly. First of all joists have to marked in the ceiling with the help of a pencil and an electronic stud finder. Moving perpendicular to the joists measure the length of the ceiling and cut the board to suit the measured length by the help of a miter saw.

The board should now be held to the ceiling in such a way that the groove faces the wall at a distance of 3/8th of an inch. The gap is to allow wood expansion. The board can be nicely secured to the joists with the help of nails. Two nails may be used for each joist.

The process can be repeated in the case of the next board too in terms of the size. The groove of the board should be set over the tongue of the first. Continue the process until the ceiling is fully covered.

Building Easy Shelves on the Walls

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

The art of building easy shelves on the walls is a step to save space in the living room or the drawing room. It is a nice idea of course to choose the wall as the support for the shelves within.

After measuring the distance between two corners of the wall where you have decided to design the shelves, cut the plank into three strips, one strip that matches the measurement you have taken and two strips of 16 inches in length. Mark the studs in the wall with an appropriate spacing of about 16 inches. After leveling at the height where you would want the shelf, use a pencil to draw a line along the top of the level chosen. Sliding the level may be done if necessary.

Attach the longest strip to the wall with the help of nails. Ends should be nicely nailed at 16 inches long.

Building and installing your domestic bar counter

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Bars are a place most suitable to hang out with friends and family, to celebrate, watch sports and to entertain. Many people create a good place to store alcohol at home by installing Bars. The first thing to decide is the place as to where to install the bar and make its measurements. Then you’ll need to make a sill plate using pressure treated 2X4 and cut it to fit the length of the bar.

The sill plate connects the bar with the floor. Then make a bottom plate using the same material to fit the sill plate on the top. On each end of the bottom plate nail 36” long studs. Remember that all studs need to be 24” apart only. Keeping this in mind mark the locations of the studs and nail them into the bottom plate. Now fix the frame to the top. Determine the size of the plywood needed to cover the outside of the frame from top of the sill plate to the bottom. You can install cabinets too behind the bar. The final step is to install the countertop. It should be long so that it hangs out about 3 inches over the front. You can finish using paints or stain.

Making Manitoba fly trap is easy in the sense that it can be made with the help of equipment available from any hardware shop. Manitoba fly trap is very effective in trapping the horseflies. First of all the screening material has to be cut into four triangles and use them to make a four-sided pyramid. Thus as the first step a pyramid is made of the sheeting material. Make a hole at the tip of the pyramid so that the flies will enter the trap.

Make a hole in the center of the plywood and stick the outside edge of the hole made at the tip of the pyramid to the inside of the hole in the plywood and allow it to dry. Then stick the base of a funnel to the inside of the lid of a jar. You will have to screw the jar into its lid. Dig a hole at the place to prepare a trap. Finally the electrical conduit has to be placed in the center of it.
